Although I have always been interested in different forms of communication, blogging never really caught my attention. People have always suggested I start one, just to keep track of my thoughts concerning various subjects, but I never did. Jotting down notes in a journal always seemed more of my niche.
My name is Emily Silva and I am a junior at Elon University in North Carolina. I am working toward my bachelor’s degree in journalism, with a minor in Spanish. This blog is part of a reporting class I am taking that counts toward my major, so I finally had to give into trying this medium.
I pride myself as an honest journalist. I consider myself a professional writer, even if I’m just doing something for a class. I feel like that’s the only way anyone will ever take me seirously – if I take myself seriously first. I value truth and strive to communicate it fully, so hopefully that will show through my writing here.
My writing is all across the board. I come from the liberal town of Chapel Hill, NC, but my Catholic upbringing sprinkled me with some conservative viewpoints, as well. I will try, however, to not show that through my writing here. My job as a reporter isn’t to convince the audience of my personal views – it’s to communicate the thoughts and views of others and to represent each side equally.
That’s the plan, and we’ll see where this whole thing ends up…
